Preserved at Downpatrick & County Down in Northern Ireland in CIÉ lined green livery, C231 was the first of the type to gain the new paint scheme replacing the silver in January 1958. Like many of its colleagues, C231 closed up operations on at least one of the branch lines it was acquired to work, in this case between Roscrea and Birr in January 1963. Its GM upgrade was completed in February 1972 and after 11 years of work it was stopped in July 1983 and withdrawn two months later. It was originally acquired by the Irish Traction Group in November 1992 as a source of spares for the society’s other C Class 226, but its condition was such that it became a candidate for re-activation as well. In 1996 it was repainted back into its 1950s green livery ready for display at the Inchicore 150 event that June and three years later it moved to RMS Locotec at Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, for electrical and cooler group work that would eventually see the 645 lump successfully started for the first time in 17 years. In August 2000 it was shown off at the Old Oak Common open day ahead of its move back to Inchicore, where it was stored until 2009. It next moved to the West Clare Railway in Moyasta but in June 2014 it was taken to Downpatrick for its restoration to be completed. While it debuted in running order at the ITG’s diesel event at the line later that year, it wouldn’t be until 2019 that it really got its chance to stretch its legs at the same railway, including in multiple with B146. Unfortunately, flooding in 2023 caused severe damage to C231’s traction motors and these are now awaiting overhaul.
