Detailed Description
Detailed Description
C209 was one of the first of the C Class to be outshopped in the new ‘black & tan’ livery in 1962, which adopted the iconic official colour of golden brown into the Irish railway colour palette for the first time. The new look was introduced to bring a sense of cohesiveness to the eclectic collection of rolling stock operated by CIÉ at that time and is often said to have been inspired by designer Patrick Scott’s calico cat Miss Mouse. This locomotive was initially based at Limerick but in its new paint scheme was recorded at Cork, Dublin, and on sleepy branch lines such as to Barragher. It was eventually released back into traffic with its new EMD 645 in April 1972 and was stored unserviceable in October 1984. It was withdrawn two years later and reduced to its component parts at Inchicore in November 1993.
